Title

Characterisation of genetic events involved in resistance to chemotherapy in breast cancer

Synopsis

Successful treatment with Taxotere, a new and promising drug, leads to cancer cell death by preventing the cells from dividing. However, only about half of all breast cancers respond to such therapy and the treatment has serious side effects such as allergic reactions and abnormally low numbers of white blood cells. Dr Schofield’s project aims to identify which patients are most likely to benefit from the treatment through identifying genetic factors involved with chemotherapy resistance.

Aims & Goals

We are trying to understand why some breast cancer patients do not respond to chemotherapy treatment. By understanding the mechanisms this will hopefully enable us to develop strategies to overcome drug resistance and to target chemotherapy to patients who are most likely to benefit.

Updates

Dr Andrew Schofield and PhD Student Sarah MacDonald at Aberdeen University have found out why the chemotherapy drug docetaxel does not work for some breast cancer patients. By looking at human genetic material they discovered that breast cancer cells with changes to chromosome 7 and 10 were resistant to docetaxel. Chemotherapy can have serious side effects and this information could allow clinicians to ascertain which breast cancer patients are likely to benefit from treatment before administering it.
