Title

Advantages of combined treatment with zoledronic acid and cytotoxic drugs in breast cancer

Synopsis

Breast cancer patients frequently undergo treatment using a combination of different drugs, and in many cases we do not know exactly how these combinations affect the tumour cells. Dr Holen will investigate combinations of frequently used drugs with zoledronic acid, which is used to treat effects of cancer once it has spread to the bone, in order to identify the most effective treatments for patients.

Aims & Goals

"We will investigate the optimal conditions for use of combined treatments and this could potentially be of great benefit for patients. We are looking at compounds already in clinical use, to see how they can be combined most effectively to give better results compared to when they are given individually".

Updates

Dr Ingunn Holen and Dr Helen Neville-Webb at the University of Sheffield have discovered that the order in which different breast cancer drugs are administered greatly affects the number of breast cancer cells killed in the laboratory. This has great potential for improving the way breast cancer patients are treated in the future. This research was published in the International Journal of Cancer (113 (3): 364-371).
