Title

The roles of ADAMTS metalloproteinases in breast cancer

Synopsis

ADAMTS 8 is a protein, which is believed to be a natural inhibitor of tumour growth, but for some reason loses its protective function in breast cancer. Professor Dylan wants to work out what ADAMTS 8 does normally, and whether this loss of function in breast cancer is involved in the change from normal to tumour cell

Aims & Goals

We have identified several genes that appear to be switched off in breast cancer compared to normal breast tissue. We want to determine whether these genes have tumour suppressor functions. In addition, we want to define robust genetic markers that will predict disease outcome in breast cancer patients, and so identify patients who are most at risk; we also want to define the critical targets for therapeutic intervention, potentially developing gene therapy in the case of our gene of interest.

Updates

Professor Dylan Edwards and PhD student Dr Sarah Porter have discovered two new ADAMTS genes which can be used to predict how a patients breast cancer will progress. They hope that these genes can be used by clinicians to tailor treatments to patients more effectively. There results have recently been published in the International Journal of Cancer.
