Title

Small molecule inhibitors of the BAG-1: HSC/HSP70 interaction

Synopsis

The BAG-1 protein is often present in large quantities in breast cancer. It not only protects breast cancer cells from cell death but actually promotes growth within these cells through binding to a second group. Dr Packham’s project aims to develop small molecules which will interfere with this interaction and thereby promote the death of these cancer cells.

Aims & Goals

Our experiments will provide valuable information about the mechanisms of cancer development and may be exploited to develop new approaches to treatment.

Updates

Dr Graham Packham and PhD student Dr Adam Sharp at the University of Southampton have discovered a potentially new breast cancer drug. This molecule stops a protein called BAG-1 from protecting breast cancer cells from dying.
