Title

The genetic epidemiology of DNA recombination repair genes in breast cancer

Synopsis

It is likely that genes other than BRCA1 and BRCA2 contribute to breast cancer susceptibility. It is already known that the protein products of these two genes participate with other proteins in the process of DNA repair. A reduction in the efficiency of the repair process may also affect breast cancer susceptibility, and this project will investigate other DNA repair genes and their interaction with the known breast cancer genes.

Aims & Goals

Our work aims to determine whether genes involved in the response to DNA damage, and its repair, are involved in breast cancer. Genes that are identified as being involved would be potential targets for novel therapies and could in the future help us identify which women might benefit from particular treatments

Updates

Dr Angela Cox and Gordon MacPherson at the University of Sheffield have found that women who have a certain form of a gene called caspase- 8 have around a 40% reduced risk of developing breast cancer. Angela has received additional funding from Breast Cancer Campaign to study these findings further. This research was recently published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (96: 1866-1869)
