Title
The role of a transcription factor, CTCF, in breast tumorigenesis
Synopsis
The quest to discover more breast cancer related genes has identified a gene called CTCF which has a negative effect on cell growth. Mutations in this gene have been found in families with a high risk of cancer. This project will investigate such mutations and also the gene’s interaction with other proteins to see if these interactions are involved in CTCF’s role in tumour formation.
Aims & Goals
Finding and characterising the genes involved in breast cancer development is instrumental for
cancer diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Our goal is to understand how these genes and their
mutated counterparts functions in normal tissues and tumours so that the appropriate cure
could be produced.
Updates
In their final report Dr Elena Klenova and Dr France Docquier at the University of Essex have discovered two potential biomarkers ,called CTCF and BORIS, that may be used for in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of breast cancer. Dr Klenova has recently received additional BCC funding to study CTCF further.
