Title

Early life influences on breast density and breast cancer risk

Synopsis

Despite intensive research, few modifiable breast cancer risks are known. However we do know that breast density (ie more fibrous and glandular than fatty tissue) is related to breast cancer risk, and this project will investigate whether early events (birth weight, overweight, exercise, diet) are related to breast density. An improved understanding of breast cancer risk factors will allow better prediction, and lead the way towards preventing cancer in future generations.

Aims & Goals

A fuller understanding of breast cancer risk factors and predictors of breast density will add to the knowledge required to prevent breast cancer risk in the future.

Updates

In the 13 months of this study, we have set up a database of women in Scotland for whom we have significant amounts of information which is of relevance to breast cancer. Firstly, we have data about these women from when they were students. We have sent a questionnaire to the women in 2001, and have digital copies of all mammograms that these women have had taken under the Breast Screening Service. We also receive copies of cancer registrations and death certificates for these women, by virtue of their being flagged at the General Registrar’s Office of Scotland. This provides a powerful dataset from which we can conduct analyses relating to risk factors for breast density and breast cancer. Dr George Davey-Smith's completed BCC project at the University of Bristol has lead to research collaborations being formed between researchers at the University of Cambridge and Oxford.
