BRCA1 gene variants in breast cancer
This Fellowship will discover more about the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1 and will provide information to make genetic testing for breast cancer more accurate.
Breast cancer patients will benefit from improved healthcare provision resulting from knowing whether the variant they carry is likely to cause cancer in them or members of their family. It will help genetic counsellors make a diagnosis of cancer predisposition. Future patients may benefit from novel markers of BRCA1 activity that the study is likely to highlight, and treatments arising from an understanding of the molecular defect that loss of BRCA1 activity confers upon cells of the mammary gland.
