Title

Identification of genes associated with endocrine resistance in breast cancer

Synopsis

The benefits of drugs such as Tamoxifen can wear off in time when tumour cells become resistant to their action. Dr Gee will try to discover the genes that are responsible for this resistance using state of the art microarray techniques, and hopes to identify if these genes responsible could be targeted by breast cancer drugs.

Aims & Goals

Microarray studies will reveal genes that may enable breast tumours to become resistant to anti-hormonal drugs such as Tamoxifen. Such knowledge would allow improved stratification of patients for therapy, and would provide potential targets for the design of effective new treatments for breast cancer sufferers.

Updates

At a recent visit to Cardiff University, Rajpal Burmi, BCC funded PhD student told us about his work which is looking at how breast cancer patients can develop resistance to treatments such as tamoxifen and faslodex over time. He has been using state of the art technology (microarrays) and is on the verge of discovering new genes that have never previously been linked to breast cancer resistance to treatments.
