Characterisation and functional analysis of candidate breast tumour suppressor genes from the human chromosomal region 3p21.3
Earlier research has identified eight candidate tumour suppressor genes which may be involved in breast cancer. Characterising these genes and their protein products will determine the role they may play in the formation of breast cancer tumours.
We are making encouraging progress investigating tumour suppressor genes involved in breast cancer. A clearer understanding of these TSGs may lead to the development of novel forms of breast cancer therapy.
Dr Farida Latif, Dr Sarah Fenton and Dr Luke Hesson at the University of Birmingham have identified a major tumour suppressor gene called RASSF1A that often stops working in the early stages of breast cancer development. The genes function can be returned by treatment with particular drugs. This work may help to design new breast cancer treatments and aid in early breast cancer diagnosis in the future.
