CD40 as a novel therapeutic target for breast cancer
CD40 is a receptor found on the surface of breast cancer cells, activated by a molecule called CD40 ligand (CD40L). Treatment of breast cancer cells with CD40L inhibits their growth and induces cell death. The mechanism by which CD40 induces these effects will be investigated as will the enhanced ability of the immune system to recognise and kill breast cancer cells after CD40L treatment.
We are looking at new ways of killing breast cancer cells by stimulating a molecule on their surface called CD40. We are hoping this will directly kill the cancer cells and also increase the ability of the immune system to recognise and kill them.
