Funding research in Ireland
Breast Cancer Campaign is now funding research projects in Ireland.
The research projects, based in Galway, Cork and Dublin, have received funding of more than £460,000 and represent a groundbreaking move for Campaign, which until now has concentrated on funding research in the UK.
The research projects:
- Professor Rosemary O'Connor, University College, Cork - to research the role of two molecules, RACK1 and Mystique, in metastasis
- Dr Marie McIlroy, Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin - to identify which patients will develop resistance to breast cancer treatments
- Dr Adrienne Gorman, National University of Ireland, Galway - to study why the NGF molecule prevents some people from benefiting from chemotherapy
Campaign is the only charity funding breast cancer research in both the UK and Ireland.
Breast cancer statistics in Ireland:
- Each year over 2,500 women and around 20 men are diagnosed with breast cancer
- Each year nearly 700 people die from breast cancer
