The Scottish Government has initiated a national discussion on the future priorities for cancer care in Scotland.
Since the introduction of the previous strategy in 2001, Cancer in Scotland: Action for Change, there have been significant improvements seen in terms of treatment and care. This has meant that for breast cancer, a woman diagnosed today is roughly 84 per cent more likely to be alive five years after diagnosis within Scotland.
Campaign welcomes the Scottish Government’s commitment to develop a new cancer action plan, which covers areas such as prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment.
Being overweight after the menopause can increase a woman's risk of breast cancer. Scotland is currently second only to the USA among developed countries in terms of the level of obesity, therefore prevention initiatives should be a priority in the new action plan.
Campaign has submitted its views to the Scottish Government on the Better Cancer Care consultation and we look forward to the publication of the full action plan in the summer 2008. We believe that together we must ensure that cancer research, from basic through to translational and clinical research, remains a priority in the political arena. This will ensure the benefits are transferred to patients as quickly as possible.
