Your gift will support research into developing new breast cancer treatments and improving current drug therapies.
For example, radiotherapy is important in the treatment of early breast cancer. Yet current radiotherapy methods can cause uneven delivery of X-rays to the breast. This causes 'hot spots', which can produce side effects such as shrinkage of the breast and a poor cosmetic result.
Your gift will help support projects such as Cambridge-based Dr Charlotte Coles, who is investigating a new form of radiotherapy called IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy). It is predicted to have fewer side effects than standard radiotherapy, such as lower levels of toxicity. This would be a major benefit for breast cancer patients.
The research has already made a huge impact on the treatment of breast cancer patients in Cambridge. It's hoped that this method of radiotherapy will eventually be available nationwide.
