Your gift will help Campaign scientists gain a greater understanding of the genetics of breast cancer. It would allow us to learn more about the genes we already know are involved in the disease and help to discover new ones.
Breast cancer is caused by alteration to the genes of a breast cell. But, with one or two exceptions, it is still not known which genes get altered. This is a major block to progress. One way genes get damaged is by breakage and rejoining of chromosomes.
Your gift will help support research such as Dr Paul Edwards in Cambridge. Dr Edwards' project aims to discover which genes become damaged in breast cancer. This would allow for a complete picture to be built to find out what goes wrong in a breast cancer cell. If succesful, this could lead to a possible set of targets for future drug development.
