Response to the comprehensive strategy for NHS Cancer Services

5th December 2007

Arlene Wilkie, Director of Research and Policy, Breast Cancer Campaign said, “This comprehensive strategy to improve NHS cancer services is positive progress for patients, including those with breast cancer.

“The emphases on helping people become more aware of cancer and how to live with it recognises the radical shift in approaches to treatment and management from the first cancer strategy.

“We fully support the extension of the Breast Cancer Screening programme in helping to tackle a disease that still sees more than 44,000 people diagnosed every year.

“The recommendation to link NICE referrals more closely to the drugs licensing process will hopefully pave the way for faster patient benefit.

"We would like to see greater government focus on research as the bedrock towards further progress and sufficient resources to put these wide ranging recommendations into practice. Ultimately breast cancer research provides the key to improving patient survival rates and further advances in beating breast cancer.”
