Breast Cancer Campaign Response to World Cancer Research Fund study into Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer

2nd November 2007

Pamela Goldberg, Chief Executive Breast Cancer Campaign said “Drinking alcohol to excess, obesity and eating large amounts of red meat have been well documented as key cancer causing risk factors. The latest findings from the World Cancer Research Fund, who should be congratulated on this comprehensive report, confirm that this is the case.

“A recent survey carried out for Breast Cancer Campaign by Ipsos MORI* showed that less than ten per cent of women knew that a diet high in saturated fat and high alcohol consumption increased the chances of developing breast cancer, which was their biggest health fear.

“The advice to lead a healthy lifestyle, maintain a healthy body weight and adopt general good health has never been more relevant. Although breast cancer survival rates are increasing, the risk of developing breast cancer can and should be reduced.

“It is right that the report outlines personal recommendations but to meet the public health goals and reverse the damaging trend of unhealthy lifestyles there needs to be sustained Government investment to support this as well.

“We hope that when the Cancer Reform Strategy is announced shortly, it will outline concerted, integrated action across Government backed up by investment to raise awareness of the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and address health inequalities to meet these goals.”
