Introduction
This document aims to outline the circumstances under which Breast Cancer Campaign will and will not accept funding from pharmaceutical companies.
Accepting support from pharmaceutical companies
Breast Cancer Campaign’s relationship with pharmaceutical companies is very positive and transparent; both parties ensure compliance with the ABPI Code of Conduct governing the relationship between patient groups and pharmaceutical companies. Breast Cancer Campaign funds research into breast cancer throughout the UK and the pharmaceutical industry has no influence over our research funding decisions.
The charity has relationships with a wide range of companies, which include pharmaceutical companies, and it ensures that it is not reliant on any particular one to ensure it maintains its independence.
Breast Cancer Campaign will also not accept funding from companies, including from the pharmaceutical sector, which may be deemed to risk damaging its reputation.
Joint support from pharmaceutical companies
Breast Cancer Campaign aims to secure the support of more than one pharmaceutical company for scientific-focused events and initiatives. This does not mean however that the charity will turn down support if only one pharmaceutical company has been secured.
Recognising support
Breast Cancer Campaign agrees levels of recognition with individual pharmaceutical companies, dependent on the event or initiative, and their level of support. This may include for instance, name recognition, branding on materials and/or at event venues, and inclusion in press releases focusing on the relevant event or initiative, in line with the ABPI code.
Cancer Campaigning Group
Breast Cancer Campaign is part of the steering group of the Cancer Campaigning Group (CCG), a coalition of 29 national cancer charities. The group is dedicated to influencing cancer policy and seeking improvements in prevention, care, treatment, information, support, patient involvement and choice, and research. The CCG is supported by five pharmaceutical companies (AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, Roche, Pfizer and sanofi-aventis). These companies have no influence over the CCG’s strategic direction, its activities or its literature. The CCG ensures that all its relationships with supporter organisations comply with the ABPI Code of Conduct governing the relationship between patient groups and pharmaceutical companies.
